Wording for Birth Announcements
Wording your Birth Announcements is never easy. Below are a few examples my clients have used over the years. Please feel free to contact us if you are looking for additional ideas.

* When there is an older sibling >
* The parent's last names are different >

Introducing your baby
There are many choices on how to introduce your baby. Here are a few more popular options:
  - We welcome with love
  - We welcome into our hearts
  - We are pleased to announce (the arrival of)
  - We joyfully announce (the birth of our son/daughter)
  - We welcome with joy our new baby boy/girl
  - We're tickled pink
  - Someone new to love
  - Tiny hands, tiny feet, there's someone new we'd like you to meet.

The Basics: weight, length, time (return to top ^)
Most people include the baby's weight and length.
Weight - the actual wording depends a lot on the space available. For example:

7 pounds 8 ounces
7 pounds, 8 ounces
7 lbs. 8 oz.

Length - if there is space, most parents include it. If space is a concern, you can place it on the same line as the birth weight.

Time - this is rarer to include, but if it's something important, then add it.

The birth announcement is often the best place to tell everyone that that you plan to call you daughter Margo, even though her name is Margaret. Simply place the nickname under the formal name in the announcement. For example:

We welcome with love
Margaret Ann
"Margo"

Another good option is to use the child's nickname on their thank you notes - e.g. Margo Smiley.

When there is an older sibling (return to top ^)

There are two popular options when there is an older sibling:

  - Sign the birth announcement with the names of all the family members - e.g. Stacey, Mark and Samantha Miller

  - Have the older child introduce the new sibling - e.g. Daniel announces the arrival of his (new) sister Amanda

When the parent's last names are different, one solution is to list the baby's full name and then sign the bottom of the baby announcement with the couple's first names.

We welcome with love
Emily Joy Strong
March 20, 2002
8 pounds, 7 ounces

Julie and Jeff

An alternative is to do the following:

Julie McDonald and Jeff Strong
announce the birth of
Emily Joy Strong
March 20, 2002
8 pounds, 7 ounces

Baby's middle name is mom's maiden name

Birth announcement wording can get confusing when a baby's middle name is the same as the mother's maiden name - and this occurs more often than you might think. One option is to write the baby's full name and sign the announcement with the parent's first names only.

We welcome with love
Jacob Samuel Lichstein

Sarah and Ben

If you want personalize thank you notes, it might work best if you write the child's first and last name and simply skip the middle name.
